Dog
food, premium, natural, organic, holistic, raw, BARF, what
is in your dogs food? You really should know. We know that
you wouldn’t intentionally compromise your pet’s
health by not providing the proper nutrition, but many of
us are unknowingly doing just that. Do you know what the daily
requirements are for your companion pet’s diet? We don’t,
either. Did you know that the food you feed your pet may cause
illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stomach
problems, or skin allergies? Why? Because the pet food industry
only uses ingredients that are unfit for human consumption.
They make a profit from waste that would otherwise be worthless
to them. That’s because your loyal friend’s food
was manufactured with YOU, the buyer, in mind. Why else would
they be in cute shapes and different colors? Dogs don’t
care about those trivial aspects of their food. All they care
about is the taste! So why do the manufacturers care what
the humans think? Because they are the ones making the purchasing
decisions for their pet. It's called Marketing.
Not all pet foods use poor ingredients, but
you have to decipher the misleading labels so you can make
an informed decision. With the obscure terms listed to describe
the ingredients, it’s no wonder people can’t tell
what’s what on a pet food label! When you see “complete
and balanced” on a package, you’re naturally inclined
to think there are regulations and guidelines the manufacturer
has to meet for their food to be labeled that way. Therefore,
the food must be okay, right? Wrong. While the NRC (National
Research Council of the Academy of Science) has set standards
that pet foods must meet, there are problems with the quality
of the standards themselves. Their standards require feeding
trials for a pet food to be labeled “complete and balanced,”
but the pet food industry rejected the feeding methods, claiming
they were “too restrictive and expensive.” To
compensate, most companies perform a chemical analysis of
the food to test if it conforms to the “Nutrient Profiles”
created by the AAFCO as an alternative to the feeding trials.
The Animal Protection Institute explains that testing does
not take into account factors such as “palatability,
digestibility, or biological availability of nutrients in
pet food.”
In an effort to help you translate what is
on the labels into something you can understand, we’ve
taken some of the most commonly confused ingredients and explained
them in terms everyone can comprehend.
